Our Story

The name Akeyo (a-KEH-yoh) comes from the Luo language of East Africa, where it is a traditional name meaning "born during harvest", a celebration of abundance, timing and new life. It is also the local name for the African Spider Plant (Cleome gynandra), a resilient, fast-growing, nutrient-rich vegetable that has sustained communities for generations. Together, these meanings capture Akeyo's mission: to plant the seeds of lasting agricultural abundance, nourish farming communities with the tools they need to thrive and build a future where every harvest brings greater prosperity.

Akeyo was founded in 2024 by Ole Dahl Rasmussen, a Danish diplomat based in Uganda. The organization began in the central region and has since expanded across multiple regions, connecting smallholder farmers with essential tools, knowledge and markets.

Today, Akeyo closes the gap between farmers and the resources they need to succeed. Our mission is carried forward daily by dedicated leaders and field teams working together to transform rural agriculture from the boardroom to the community.

Our Board of Directors brings deep experience in governance, finance and agricultural development. Together with our CEO and management team, they ensure Akeyo remains focused, accountable and effective in serving rural farming communities across Africa.
